Bitcoin, Russia & The Fragility of Wealth ft. Anton Gulin

In the 6th episode of VALR Unfiltered: Money, Meaning & Society, host Ben Caselin engages Anton Gulin, Co-Founder and Chief Product Owner of Bincentric, in a candid discussion about Russia’s economic landscape and Bitcoin’s role within it. Born and raised in Russia but now based in Kotor, Montenegro, Anton offers a nuanced perspective on wealth, crypto adoption, and the impermanence of financial systems.

The conversation begins with Russia’s economy, where wealth concentrates around energy resources and infrastructure, flowing back to Moscow. Anton highlights stark wealth disparities, akin to other BRICS nations, with the ruble—down 71.5% against the dollar since 2008—facing persistent devaluation despite the Central Bank’s conservative efforts. Russia’s 2,300-ton gold reserves remain largely untouched, a strategic move amid sanctions that have frozen foreign currency assets, underscoring vulnerabilities in global finance.

Sanctions, Anton explains, have hit ordinary Russians hardest, reducing the ruble’s purchasing power and complicating life for those abroad due to overzealous compliance by international firms. Yet, a vibrant OTC crypto market thrives in Russia and Eastern Europe, offering seamless conversions to USDT and Bitcoin, driven by a tech-savvy culture adept at navigating restrictions. Bitcoin mining, legalized in 2024, has boosted Siberia’s economy, particularly in Irkutsk, leveraging hydropower and creating ancillary markets.

Anton sees crypto, especially Bitcoin and USDT, as increasingly vital in Russia, fueled by sanctions and ruble instability. However, he warns of a potential black swan event, citing quantum computing as a risk to Bitcoin’s security that could shake confidence, though recovery might follow. Reflecting on global economic fragility, he questions the sustainability of debt-driven systems, advocating for diversified assets like gold and Bitcoin to hedge against collapse. This episode challenges listeners to rethink wealth and resilience in an uncertain world, blending Russian insights with universal themes of value and stability.
