How to Buy Stocks with Crypto in South Africa

How to Buy Stocks with Crypto in South Africa

Buying stocks with crypto no longer means opening a separate overseas brokerage account. On VALR, tokenised U.S. stocks and ETFs are available as xStocks, purchasable with Bitcoin, stablecoins, or South African Rand.

xStocks are 1:1 backed tokenised representations of U.S. equities and ETFs, issued by Backed. They cover names like Tesla, NVIDIA, Coinbase, Robinhood, Circle, and Strategy, as well as broader market products such as SPYX. They trade 24/7 on VALR, so there is no waiting for markets to reopen like in traditional brokerage accounts.

How to Buy Stocks with Crypto in South Africa in 3 Simple Steps

Step 1: Log into Your VALR Account

Start by signing into your VALR account through the website or the VALR app. If you don’t have a VALR account, you can create one here. The verification process is quick and straightforward, taking only a few minutes.

Step 3: Buy the xStock

Once your funds are available, purchase the stock token in one of two ways.

Simple Buy & Sell is the easiest option. Go to the Simple Buy & Sell section, search for the xStock you want, such as TSLAX, NVDAX, COINX, HOODX, CRCLX, MSTRX, or SPYX, choose BTC, USDT, USDC, or ZAR as the payment currency, enter the amount and confirm.

You can also trade xStocks on the VALR Exchange spot order book, where pairs are quoted against USDT. This is useful if you want limit orders or more control over the price.

xStocks can also be deposited and withdrawn via the Solana network, so you can move them on-chain if needed.

Why Traders Use Crypto to Buy Stocks

Using crypto or ZAR on VALR removes several traditional barriers. You can buy fractional exposure instead of a full share, trade outside U.S. market hours, and keep stocks and crypto in one account. Settlement is faster than conventional share dealing, and you do not need a separate foreign brokerage setup to get started.

VALR also offers Perps markets on selected equities and indices for traders who want leveraged long or short exposure rather than holding the tokenised stock itself. That is a different product with different risks, so review the contract details carefully before using leverage.

What to Keep in Mind

xStocks track the price of the underlying company, which means they move with U.S. markets, earnings results, and broader risk sentiment. They do not give you shareholder voting rights or the legal ownership you would get through a traditional brokerage. The price exposure is real; the ownership is not. Before buying, confirm the ticker, check live prices on VALR, and only use capital you can afford to lose.
