Perpetual Futures on Stocks: How Traders Obtain Continuous Price Exposure Without Owning Shares
Trading and navigating stock markets has long involved a range of instruments, from direct share ownership through traditional brokerages to options, standard futures contracts, and contracts for difference. One relatively recent addition is the use of perpetual futures on individual equities and equity indices. These instruments, commonly referred to as equity perps or stock perps, allow traders to obtain leveraged price exposure to listed companies without owning the underlying shares and without the constraints of conventional market hours.
Synthetic Exposure Without the Share Certificate
An equity perpetual is a derivative contract that tracks the price of a reference stock or index through an oracle or aggregated price feed. Traders deposit collateral, typically a stablecoin such as USDT or USDC, and open either a long or a short position. A long position increases in value when the tracked price rises; a short position increases in value when the tracked price falls. There is no expiry date, so a position can be held indefinitely provided the required margin is maintained. Because no actual shares change hands, the holder receives neither dividends nor voting rights and has no claim on the company’s assets. Settlement occurs entirely in the collateral currency.
From Bitcoin Trails to Equity Screens: A Brief Origin Story
Perpetual futures originated in crypto markets. In May 2016 BitMEX launched the first widely adopted perpetual swap on Bitcoin, solving the practical problem of having to roll expiring futures contracts in a market that operated continuously. The design drew on earlier conceptual work, including ideas explored by economist Robert Shiller in the 1990s and practical arrangements used for decades on the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange in Hong Kong, but the modern funding-rate mechanism and high-leverage crypto implementation crystallised at BitMEX. The structure became the dominant derivatives product in digital-asset trading. From early 2026 onwards a number of centralised and decentralised platforms began applying the same framework to traditional stocks and indices, creating equity perps.
How Funding Keeps the Contract Anchored
Price alignment between the perpetual and the underlying equity is achieved through the funding-rate mechanism. At regular intervals, usually every one to eight hours depending on the venue, a payment is exchanged between long and short holders. When the perpetual trades at a premium to the index price, longs pay shorts; when it trades at a discount, shorts pay longs. The size of the payment is calculated from the premium or discount, often combined with an interest-rate component and subject to caps. This continuous transfer incentivises arbitrage that keeps the contract price close to the reference. Outside regular equity-market hours the index may be derived from the perpetual’s own order book or from synthetic pricing models, which can introduce temporary basis risk.
Hours, Shorts, and Leverage: Where the Two Markets Diverge
The practical differences from conventional share trading are substantial. Traditional equity markets in the United States operate for approximately 6.5 hours on weekdays and remain closed on weekends and holidays. Equity perps trade continuously, allowing participants to react to earnings releases, macroeconomic data, or geopolitical events the moment they occur. Short selling requires no share locate and incurs no borrow fee or recall risk. Leverage is typically higher than the 2x overnight margin common in cash equities; platforms have offered between 5x and 20x on major single-stock contracts and higher on certain index products or decentralised venues. Capital efficiency is therefore greater, yet the same leverage magnifies losses and raises the probability of liquidation if the margin ratio falls below the maintenance threshold.
The Names That Dominate Both Cash and Perpetual Books
Market data illustrate both the scale of the underlying equities and the still-nascent size of the perpetual segment. As of late July 2026 the largest United States companies by market capitalisation included Apple at roughly $4.9 trillion to $5 trillion, NVIDIA at roughly $4.75 trillion to $5 trillion, Alphabet at roughly $4 trillion to $4.1 trillion, Microsoft at roughly $2.9 trillion, Amazon at roughly $2.5 trillion, Meta Platforms at roughly $1.5 trillion, and Tesla at roughly $1.2 trillion. These seven firms, often grouped as the Magnificent Seven, together represented approximately $21.85 trillion and a significant share of the S&P 500’s total capitalisation.
The same names dominate equity-perp listings. Contracts on Apple, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla appear on most major venues, alongside index products tracking the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100. Additional single-stock contracts frequently cover semiconductor firms such as Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology, as well as crypto-linked equities such as Coinbase and Strategy. On decentralised platforms such as Hyperliquid, HIP-3 markets linked to equities and indices contributed nearly $4 billion of open interest within a broader open-interest figure of approximately $11.5 billion by late July 2026. Equity-index perpetual open interest across tracked venues exceeded $800 million on some days, with individual S&P 500-linked contracts holding several hundred million dollars. Monthly trading volumes in tokenised and equity-related real-world-asset perpetuals expanded from around $85 billion in January 2026 to approximately $470 billion by June, with equities forming a growing share of that activity.
Measuring a Nascent Segment Against Trillions
Despite this growth, equity-perp open interest remains a small fraction of the more than one trillion dollars of daily notional turnover in traditional United States equity markets. Liquidity is concentrated on a handful of platforms, and access is typically restricted for United States persons under existing regulatory frameworks. Oracle reliability, open-interest limits, and leverage caps vary by venue, and corporate actions such as dividends, stock splits, or mergers require careful index adjustment to avoid unexpected basis effects.
Leverage, Gaps and the Cost of Carrying: The Principal Risks
Several categories of risk distinguish equity perps from cash-share ownership. Leverage compresses the distance to liquidation. At 10x leverage a 10% adverse move can erase the entire margin; at higher multiples the buffer shrinks further. Liquidation cascades can occur when many leveraged positions are closed simultaneously, amplifying price moves. Funding payments, while small on any single interval, accumulate over time and can erode or eliminate a profitable directional position if the rate remains persistently against the holder. Price gaps arise when traditional markets reopen after overnight or weekend news has already been priced into the perpetual, or conversely when the cash market moves sharply and the perpetual lags. Oracle or index-feed interruptions introduce temporary disconnects. Platform, smart-contract, and collateral risks (including stablecoin de-pegs) add further layers of exposure that do not exist in regulated brokerage accounts holding actual shares.
In comparison with traditional single-stock futures, which have fixed expiry dates and require periodic rollovers, equity perps eliminate the need to manage calendar cycles and associated basis costs. In comparison with tokenised stocks, which aim to represent a claim on real shares held by a custodian, equity perps provide no ownership rights and rely solely on synthetic tracking. The trade-off is higher capital efficiency and continuous trading against the absence of dividends, voting power, and regulatory investor protections that accompany registered share ownership.
What to Examine Before Opening a Position
Participants evaluating these instruments examine contract specifications carefully: the precise funding interval and formula, maximum leverage, maintenance-margin requirements, open-interest caps, oracle source, and treatment of corporate actions. Position sizing relative to available collateral remains the primary defence against liquidation. Monitoring the prevailing funding rate supplies information both on the cost of carry and on the balance of market positioning. Because equity perps are pure derivatives, they cannot be used to meet regulatory shareholding thresholds or to exercise shareholder rights.
One Tool Among Many in the Equity Toolkit
Equity perpetual futures represent one method of obtaining directional exposure to listed companies. They extend trading hours, simplify short selling, and increase capital efficiency, while introducing leverage dynamics, funding costs, and the complete absence of ownership entitlements. The mechanical differences, the current market scale, and the specific risks define their characteristics within equity-market instruments.
